Reuters/Ipsos poll: Half of Americans approve of Trump's handling of North Korea

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un shake hands ahead of their meeting at Capella Hotel in Singapore on June 12

U.S. President Donald Trump was left to talk up a poor deal on Tuesday afternoon as he emerged from a day of photo ops and brief discussions with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

"Just landed - a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office", Trump tweeted as he arrived back in Washington.

But Panetta, who previously worked for President Barack Obama, said there are a "huge number of issues" that will actually involve the denuclearization of North Korea, which owns an estimated 20 to 60 nuclear weapons with about 141 sites that can produce them.

With a handshake that lasted for about 13 seconds, North Korea's Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump on Tuesday scripted history during the first-ever and much-awaited meeting between the two countries.

"President Trump appreciated that an atmosphere of peace and stability was created on the Korean Peninsula and in the region, although distressed with the extreme danger of armed clash only a few months ago, thanks to the proactive peace-loving measures taken by the respected Supreme Leader from the outset of this year", the report said. The "most unsafe problem" outlined by former President Barack Obama was no longer a threat, he added.

But he said that was no longer the case, and everyone can "sleep well tonight". -South Korea war games as part of the negotiations with Kim.

A report in North Korea's Rodong Sinmun newspaper, another state-run outlet, claimed on Wednesday that the US agreed to offer rewards as North Korea moved toward ridding itself of nukes.

On Wednesday Trump framed this as a win, saying the USA will now "save a fortune". Also, by letting North Korea dictate what the USA military does, Trump sends the United States down a slippery slope. That concession to Kim appeared to catch the Pentagon and officials in Seoul off guard, and some South Koreans were alarmed. South Korea will now purchase F-35A stealth aircraft from Lockheed Martin, one of the company's most modern fighters. It has arguably gotten more brutal under the 34-year-old third current dictator, to whom Mr. Trump was so courteous and even complimentary in their Singapore meetings. He says Trump "made very clear" that the condition for the freeze was that good-faith talks continue.

Trump also said in a separate tweet that North Korea is "no longer" the US' "biggest and most risky problem", telling Americans and the rest of the world they can "sleep well tonight!" -South Korea joint missile drill aimed to counter North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missile test in East Coast, South Korea, July 5, 2017.

Asked specifically about verification of Pyongyang's denuclearization and whether it will be irreversible - objectives outlined by Trump but unmentioned in the statement - Pompeo said: "The modalities are beginning to develop".

Ultimately, that may end up being the only option that the United States has short of war.

"From now on, I think there will be more chances for [the U.S.] to bring up human rights".

The next scheduled major exercise, known as Ulchi Freedom Guardian and involving tens of thousands of troops, normally is held in August. Both sides promised to push the process forward quickly, and Trump and Kim exchanged invitations to each other to visit their nations' capitals.
