Italian court convicts man over kidnap of model

MILAN (Reuters) - A Polish man living in Britain was sentenced to more than 16 years in an Italian prison on Monday for kidnapping a British model in Milan last July.

Prosecutors in the case of Lukasz Herba said Ms Ayling was drugged and kidnapped after she showed up at a Milan address for a modelling job, then held for six days at a farmhouse in the neighbouring Piedmont region before being released at the British consulate in Milan.

Since returning to Britain, Ayling has given a number of media interviews in which she said she was drugged, gagged, bound, stuffed into a bag, put into the boot of a auto and driven to a village near Turin.

Herba denied guilt throughout the trial, and claimed Ms Ayling agreed to the scheme to boost her career.

The 30-year-old threatened to auction her on the internet while trying to extort £230,000 from her agent Phil Green. Herba said he was in love with her and they came up with this abduction scheme together to help with her financial difficulties.

Investigators said the behaviour she exhibited during her capture was consistent with the effects of the drug.

Ayling said she was told the deep-web "Black Death Group" wanted to sell her at auction for 300,000 euros ($355,000), unless she could come up with the ransom.

He said he was paid £500,000, found out the Romanians meant to kidnap her, and backed out of the plan.

When no money came through, he released her, hoping he would show some kind of fake "mercy" which would build her feelings for him.

The original MTV animated Aeon Flux show, created by animator Peter Chung , first debuted in 1991 as a six-part series of shorts. Hopefully, this new series can match reverse that negative reaction.

Michael Summers QC, representing Michal Herba at London's High Court, said: "There is cogent evidence to suggest that it was a publicity stunt, rather than a bona fide allegation".

Herba´s brother Michal Herba was arrested in the United Kingdom in August 2017 in connection with the crime and faces extradition to Italy.

But in his shifting story line, Herba also testified previously that he concocted the alleged criminal group and that his brother - not a Romanian criminal group - helped him in the scheme agreed to by Ayling.

In his closing arguments, Storari noted that Herba had invested at least 10,000 euros (A$15,503) in the kidnapping, taking into account real estate rentals and travel.

The prosecutor also cited Herba's purchase of two ski masks, which Chloe said she saw kidnappers wearing when she was freed from the canvas bag, and the exchange of notes with his brother about cleaning the auto trunk well to make sure there were no traces of her hair.

"It means now she can get on with her life".

During closing arguments, his lawyer, Katia Kolakowska, cited an email she received from a USA film producer, who pointed out that Ayling's story closely matches the plot of a movie titled "By Any Means", that was released about eight weeks before the 2017 kidnapping.

Ayling's lawyer, Pesce, dismissed the attempt to discredit his client, saying "there have been films made about every crime in the world". "It's hard if you're being painted in the press as a liar, and now she's able to say, "I know it's a freakish story, but it's a true one".
