Intel: Expect our first discrete GPUs by 2020

Intel Gaming

Whether this is an evolution of Intel's Gen GPU or an entirely new architecture remains to be seen, as there are good arguments for both sides.

Intel's Raja Koduri, VP of the Core and Visual Computing Group.

Moorhead said it'll probably take a "few revisions" of Intel's first GPUs before they become a real threat to AMD and Nvidia's business.

The initiative will set Intel up for building a portfolio of graphics chips not just for gaming and PC enthusiasts, but for the enterprise in the data center and artificial intelligence.

By 2020 AMD will have a 7nm Navi GPU already on the shelves for a year, and potentially a more powerful refresh of the initial mainstream design ready to roll too.

The tweet was posted amidst reports that Intel had given the same details to a small group of analysts last week, with the tweet being released to confirm those reports. MarketWatch points out that 2020's GPU launch will mark the first step in a quest to bring high-performance GPUs to many major markets, including data centre, AI, and of course, gaming.

Discrete GPUs are standalone components from the CPU that enable more powerful graphics than the integrated GPUs Intel now offers.

The last time we heard about Intel's dedicated GPU is that it would be unveiled at CES 2019, but according to new information from Intel itself, their dedicated GPU won't be arriving until 2020.

But the hardware is only one side of the argument - software, the drivers, are equally important in making sure that your GPU and your games play nicely together.

This new GPU would be the first GPU to come out of Intel's revitalized GPU efforts, which kicked into high gear at the end of 2017 with the hiring of former AMD and Apple GPU boss Raja Koduri.

Intel isn't saying anything else about the GPU at this time. He's a passionate driver guy, and it's going to have to be a passion project to get Intel's graphics drivers up to spec in two years.
