Has Theresa May only delayed her Brexit defeat by a few days?

GETTYThe furious Brexit Secretary agreed with Steve Baker and Suella Braverman to form a pact

Theresa May has suffered a ministerial resignation ahead of crunch Commons votes on Brexit, with Phillip Lee hitting out at the Government's "irresponsible" approach.

A junior British justice minister said on Tuesday he will resign and will vote with pro-European Union rebels who want parliament to have the power to force the government to go back to the negotiating table if they reject a Brexit deal. The prime minister still has time to come up with a form of words acceptable to both sides, but the expectations of the anti-Brexit rebels have been raised significantly.

"The decision was taken by the people, we gave them that decision and we have to stand by it", said Conservative MP Bill Cash.

The Lib Dems, who identify strongly as an anti-Brexit party to the point of pushing for a second referendum and running by-elections in Remain-friendly seats on that platform, opposed the Government.

Ministers saw off a move to give MPs the decisive say on what happens over Brexit if they do not agree with the deal negotiated by the United Kingdom government.

Commenting on the government's actions to avoid a defeat over the "meaningful vote" demands, Labour's shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer said: "This vote was about ensuring Parliament was given a proper role in the Brexit negotiations and that we avoid a no deal situation, which is becoming more likely with the divisions at the heart of this government". One says: "If we do not get what we were promised the Government will be defeated after we have amended the Bill in the Lords".

"The government have conceded that this is necessary and I expect to see a new amendment to cover this situation soon".

The amendment in question hinges on whether lawmakers will get a "meaningful" vote on Britain's membership of the European Union. "And I can not bring myself to vote for it in the bastion of liberty, freedom and human rights that is our Parliament".

It will repeal the European Communities Act, which took Britain into what was then the European Economic Community, meaning EU law is no longer supreme in the UK. "It is, however, irresponsible to proceed as we are". Brexit-backers objected as it would have all but removed the no-deal nuclear option from negotiators' arsenal.

"The Government's amendment today provides for a meaningful vote".

"Whatever we do, we're not going to reverse that (decision to leave the EU)", David told BBC radio.

Brexit Secretary David Davis, who reportedly has clashed with May, has warned Conservative Party rebels that proposals to give Parliament the power to direct negotiations with the European Union are simply a tactic to overturn the results of the 2016 referendum that mandated Britain's departure from the bloc.

Theresa May's government gives in to Tory rebels in order to avoid a major defeat on the EU Withdrawal Bill.

In his letter, Mr Davis said it was "simply not right" that Parliament could effectively overturn the referendum result.

A dispute quickly arose about the third clause of Grieve's amendment, with Brexiters, including some ministers, quickly saying all that had been agreed was talks - and no government could agree to be "directed" by MPs.

Nicky Morgan has been an outspoken critic of Brexit, but she backed the government following its concessions.

"Grieve's amendment puts that right and in a way Govt could and should accept it".

The government says lawmakers should be offered a choice only between its final deal and no deal at all.

He also warned any attempt by so-called hard Brexiteers to "overthrow" Mrs May would be "completely mad".

Government sources signalled to the Press Association that ministers were set to back the move.
