Panama’s former president to be extradited home Monday: lawyer

Former Panamanian president Ricardo Martinelli is being escorted to a plane by United States security officials on Monday.

Nauert said Martinelli's extradition followed normal procedures established by the countries' bilateral extradition treaty.

Martinelli appeared handcuffed in photos shared by Panama's security ministry and was transported to Renacer prison, where former strongman Manuel Noriega, who died previous year, had been held. He faces embezzlement charges and allegations he wiretapped judges, political rivals and others while in office. Martinelli appealed the decision but was rejected by the Southern District of Florida.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan issued a warrant ordering the ex-president to surrender to Panamanian authorities.

The State Department said on Monday it made the decision in accordance with a bilateral treaty and US laws.

Oil prices drop as supplies increase
American oil production has jumped by nearly a third in the last two years to a record 10.8 million barrels per day. Oil prices are set, for the most part, by Saudi Arabia and, to a lesser extent, it's OPEC partners.

Panama's former President Ricardo Martinelli has been extradited to his homeland from the United States, where he has been held on charges of political espionage and corruption, one of his lawyers said.

According to a statement by the Justice Department, Martinelli was indicted in Panama for illicitly monitoring the private communications of more than 150 people he identified as "targets" through the use of two multi-million dollar surveillance systems.

Martinelli's attorney Roniel Ortiz did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Panamanian officials alleged that soon after becoming president, Martinelli Berrocal launched the National Security Council with a "special services" arm that carried out his confidential instructions. On May 15 he asked the State Department to deny the extradition request, saying that he would be tortured in Panama.
