Pres. Trump takes more swipes at Canada after arrival in Singapore

US President Donald Trump accuses India of charging 100 per cent tariff on some imports

President Donald Trump with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the G7 summit.

Michael Hayden, the former CIA Director under President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama, blasted President Trump Monday as "unstable" following his actions at the G7 summit in Canada this weekend.

The joint communique is a statement of broad goals and principles endorsed by the G7 leaders, and Trump's refusal means that this will be the first year that the annual summit fails to issue one.

June 8 - On Day 1 of the summit, Trump jokes to reporters that "Justin has agreed to cut all tariffs, all trade barriers between Canada and the United States". "We must put the American worker first!" he later wrote.

Later on June 9, after he left the G7 summit, Trump unleashed a barrage of tweets, likely while he was aboard Air Force One on his way to Singapore for his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un - "Just left the @G7 Summit in handsome Canada".

For good measure, Trump sent out more tweets the morning of June 8 before his arrival in Quebec - "Canada charges the USA a 270% tariff on Dairy Products!".

"He followed up by asking why the U.S. should "allow countries to continue to make "massive trade surpluses", asserting that it is "not fair to the people of America" and that the United States is suffering under a "$800 billion trade deficit".

Mrs May told the Commons that she made clear to Mr Trump that the levies were unacceptable - but she underlined the need for dialogue to stop the dispute from escalating. So it is even more unusual.

Trump responded to the Canadian prime minster's news conference by tweeting that because of Trudeau's statement, he would not sign the communique that the G-7 nations had drafted at the summit.

Trudeau, who had said at the news conference that Canada would retaliate for new USA tariffs, didn't respond to questions about Trump when the prime minister arrived at a Quebec City hotel Sunday for meetings with other world leaders. "As Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but also we will not be pushed around", he said.

The war of words escalated following Trump's departure from the summit, as he expressed displeasure with Trudeau's remarks on the unfairness of US tariffs, and Canada's determination to not be pushed around.

Trudeau "really kind of stabbed us in the back", White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday, calling on the Canadian to apologise.

"Well, he holds a press conference and he says the insulting".

Krueger said the strong words most likely reflected the president's thinking.

The outbursts continued Sunday when one of Trump's most trusted advisers, Peter Navarro, went on Fox News to declare "there is a special place in hell" for Trudeau.

David Akin wonders if Canada and its G7 allies can trust the U.S.?

Outside the Trump-Trudeau dustup, other G7 leaders also expressed displeasure with Trump's hardline approach. "We are sticking to them and whoever reneges on them is showing incoherence and inconsistency", President Emmanuel Macron's office said on Sunday in a statement to AFP news agency.

Ahead of his departure, Trump had criticised his predecessors for negotiating "unfair" trade deals.

But French president Emmanuel Macron said "International cooperation can not be dictated by fits of anger and throwaway remarks".

Trump's stinging critique - while technically accurate - obscures the larger trade relationship between the two countries.

The EU then announced tariffs on United States goods ranging from Harley-Davidson motorcycles to bourbon.

The news conference took place as planned and Canadian officials believed all was well as Trump and his team departed for Singapore.

Trump upended the agreement reached by allies at the G-7 after leaving the conference, trashing Canada's prime minister in scathing tweets.

Trump has already kick-started an investigation into auto imports, which could result in tariffs on foreign vehicles.
