California woman hospitalized after bison attacks her at Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone superintendent says Trump administration is replacing him

A bison in Yellowstone National Park gored a woman Wednesday morning after a group of park goers crowded the animal, the National Park Service said in a statement Thursday.

The park identified the woman as 59-year-old Kim Hancock of Santa Rosa. The bison became agitated and charged the crowd, officials said. It then immediately fled the area. Hancock received a hip injury as a result of the attack and was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Big Sky, Montana, according to the release. Authorities said she was in good condition.

The two women were among four people injured by various types of wildlife in the park in just over a month.

In early May, 72-year-old Virginia Junk of Boise, Idaho, was rammed by a bison and pushed off a trail.

Park staff do not intend to capture nor kill the bison.

The park service said Wednesday's incident remains under investigation. A year ago there were five bison attacks in the park.

A safe distance is at least 75 feet, the park stressed.

Park officials instructed visitors to give animals space, even near trails, boardwalks, parking lots and other developed areas. Two women were attacked by elk in separate incidents, one on Sunday and another on Tuesday, near the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel, according to officials who also said it wasn't clear whether the same animal was involved in both encounters. "If you can't maintain these distances, turn around and find an alternate route".
