Facebook's Trending news box follows fired freelancers out the door

Facebook killing controversial ‘Trending’ feature, breaking news alerts and more coming

According to the company, Trending accounted for only 1.5 per cent of click to news publishers on average and thus it is being removed. Democrats have blamed Hillary Clinton's surprise defeat, among other things, on fake news, "Russian" ads, and user data harvested by Cambridge Analytica.

Facebook has announced today that it's going to be removing the Trending section from its platform to make way for a modern news experience. There will also be a dedicated news section in Facebook Watch.

Facebook is shutting down its ill-fated "trending" news section after four years.

Facebook indicated that they will discriminate against sources the platform doesn't deem to be trustworthy, saying the system is created to keep users informed of "timely, breaking news" while "making sure the news they see on Facebook is from trustworthy and quality sources".

The social network is also testing a section called "Today In" that aims to connect users to the latest breaking news from local publishers in their respective cities.

Facebook is testing new features, including a breaking news label that publishers can add to stories to distinguish them. Products and third-party partner integrations that rely on the Trend API will also be pulled out of service, Hardiman said.

In response to a question, he added that American troop levels in South Korea would not be on the agenda for the summit talks. Mattis also said that the United States will continue to expand and deepen its connectivity in the Indo-Pacific region.

The quality of news on Facebook has been called into question after alleged Russian operatives, for-profit spammers and others spread false reports on the site, including during the 2016 USA election campaign. Facebook is done with Trending, though.

While it may have been unloved, Trending Topics has also been the source of significant controversy, both over what shows up in it and how the company decides to moderate or filter it.

The "breaking news" label that Facebook is testing with 80 news publishers around the world will let outlets such as The Washington Post add a red label to indicate that a story is breaking news, highlighting it for users who want accurate information as things are happening.

According to the Pew Research Center, 44 percent of US adults get some or all of their news through Facebook. "And we're investing in ways to better draw attention to breaking news when it matters most".

According to Recode, publishers will be able to leave a breaking news tag on a story for 15 minutes and up to six hours, but the tag now being tested does not boost the story's ranking in people's feeds.
