Amazon confirms Echo device shared user’s private conversation

Alexa might have committed the ultimate tech crime

"At first, my husband was, like, 'no you didn't!' And then [they] said, 'You sat there talking about hardwood floors.' And we said, 'Oh gosh, you really did hear us!'"

However the mother of the Portland family, who reported the incident to KIRO 7 television, said in a follow-up interview that the Echo that shared her conversation was very close to her, and the volume was set to seven out of 10.

"A husband and wife in the privacy of their home have conversations that they're not expecting to be sent to someone (in) their address book", said Danielle to KRIO-TV CBS 7 News.

"I felt invaded", the woman, only identified as Danielle, said in the report. "A total privacy invasion".

"Unplug your Alexa devices right now", a voice on the other line said.

Amazon said in an emailed statement to The Washington Post on Thursday afternoon that the Echo woke up when it heard a word that sounded like "Alexa".

"As unlikely as this string of events is, we are evaluating options to make this case even less likely", Amazon added. "The subsequent conversation was heard as a "send message" request".

The popularity of smart speakers may be increasing day by day, but there are still some people who believe the speakers are secretly recording and uploading every word that comes out of our mouths.

What is hasn't done yet has sent private conversations to a seemingly random person, but this has just happened to someone.

Danielle says Amazon has been unwilling to give the family a refund for the devices.

Amazon has described the event as an "extremely rare occurrence".

Panicked, they did what he said; unplugging the Alexas they kept in each room to control the heating and lighting in the house.

Now, since this story has gone viral, an Amazon spokesperson has been forced to confirm that the incident took place, and it released an explanation of what happened. An Alexa engineer responded.

Danielle, the family member who contacted Amazon, stated that Amazon did not provide any details as to how or why this happened.

"What makes it particularly unfortunate is the sense that Amazon Echo users will have that there's any prospect that what they say in their private home might end up outside the home", Calo said.
