Uber ends autonomous-vehicle program in Arizona

Uber shutters self-driving car testing program in Arizona

The company had previously frozen all public testing of its self-driving cars in the state, after one of the vehicles struck a pedestrian in Tempe, AZ.

Uber will continue to keep "an open dialogue" with Gov. Ducey's office, the company's statement said, adding it plans to "continue our investment in Arizona through our core rideshare and Eats businesses".

This comes after one of the company's self-driving vehicles was involved in a fatal collision with a pedestrian in March, on Mill Avenue south of Curry Road. The car's autonomous system failed to recognize the person and take evasive action and the observer in the vehicle was looking down at the time of the crash.

Uber recently hired former National Transportation Safety Board chairman Christopher Hart to conduct a "top-to-bottom" safety review of its self-driving auto program on safety matters following the Arizona crash.

Uber Technologies Inc is not shuttering its entire autonomous vehicle programme and will focus on limited testing in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and two cities in California, a spokeswoman said.

Despite the fact that early indications seem to show the accident may not have been the AI's fault, and the company voluntarily stopped testing, Arizona's Governor insists on upholding a suspension until such time as the Federal investigation has completed.

The ride-sharing service said in a prepared statement that it remains focused on a "top-to-bottom safety review" and will now focus more efforts on its engineering hubs in Pittsburgh and San Francisco.

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, who was in Milan, Italy, Wednesday at the The Rockefeller Foundation's 2018 City XChange Summit, said he was not told about Uber's decision to restart testing.

Meyhofer said Uber will tweak how it tests cars on the road.

The ride-hailing company said Wednesday that it will pull out of the state and that all its almost 300 test drivers there will be terminated. The vast majority of vehicle tests haven't been done on public roads, and the cars are still learning how to drive.

About 300 employees in Uber's Arizona operations will lose their jobs, according to the Arizona Republic . Uber is talking to San Francisco and Sacramento about testing in those cities. Uber's main driverless research group is based in Pittsburgh.

Two days after the crash, the Tempe Police Department said that it did not appear Uber was at fault in the fatal crash.

Khosrowshahi has promised he won't allow Uber's self-driving cars back on public roads again until he is convinced the vehicles are safe.
