Apple shipped iPhone 6, 6 Plus knowing they would bend

Apple refunding Rs. 3,900 for iPhone battery replacements

On December 29 a year ago, Apple announced a reduction in the out-of-warranty battery replacement price for iPhone 6 or later devices, after it was forced to apologise for deliberately slowing down performance of older iPhones. Internal tests revealed the iPhone 6 to be 3.3 times more likely to bend than the iPhone 5s, and the 6 Plus being 7.2 times more likely to bend.

The refund is valid on iPhone 6 or later models and on batteries replaced between January 1, 2017, and December 28, 2017. The refund appears to be the latest step in shielding the company against class-action lawsuit damages relating to last year's iPhone battery performance debacle.

Soon after Apple released the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus-the first oversized phone the company made-in 2014, stories swirled that the phones bent dramatically from normal usage, like pulling the phone in and out of pockets.

The iPhone battery slowdown saga began when GeekBench discovered some older iPhones were running slower than expected. Apple says that the rebate is only valid for replacements that were completed at an authorized service location, including an Apple Store, Apple Repair Centre or Apple Authorized service provider.

Motherboard, in its report, said Apple did not previously stated that the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus had bending problems resulting in what was called "touch disease", in which the touchscreen works intermittently.

The $80 credit announced today means that Australian users that paid full price past year are no worse off than those who put up with device performance issues.

Now, Apple hopes to resolve that with a new refund to customers.

Apple will contact customers between May 23 and July 27 about the credit. The discounted $29 program went into effect on December 29, 2017 and lasts until the end of 2018.

It then dropped the price of replacing an iPhone 6 battery to just £25 before offering the credit.
