Memorial Day events, parades planned across Washtenaw County

Hot will be the theme for the Memorial Day weekend. The American Automobile Association of Wisconsin said the average price of a gallon of self-serve unleaded gas in the state is $2.90, which is 29 cents more than a month ago and 56 cents more than last Memorial Day.

All events take place Monday, May 28 unless otherwise noted.

The youth of Blanchard Church of Christ will hold a bake sale in front of the church on Beach Street beginning at 9 parade watchers can enjoy some tasty treats with their morning coffee as they wait for the parade to pass by. The church sits along the parade route.

The community and all veterans organizations are invited to participate in a Memorial Day worship service at 9 a.m. Sunday at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 1915 Hogeboom Ave. Services will be broadcast live on WBLF AM Radio.

The Boalsburg Memorial Day Parade will be held Saturday. Line-up for the parade begins at 3 p.m. and the parade starts at 5 p.m. The event is rain or shine.

Plymouth American Legion, will sponsor Memorial Day service at 11 a.m.

Members will conduct military honors Monday, May 28 at 1 the LaJose Cemetery, Newburg. Guests attending are asked to bring a lawn chair or folding chair as seating is limited. The parade will end at Riverfront Park, 201 N. Harrison St., for a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial hosted by Lake in the Hills American Legion Post 1231. Following a brief ceremony at the veterans memorial near the high school, the parade will go along OH 60 to the Beverly Cemetery where a memorial ceremony will be held for the veterans buried in the cemetery.

In Parkersburg, The Veterans Museum of the Mid-Ohio Valley will be hosting the annual Memorial Day Cookout at City Park on Monday from 1-3 the shelter closest to the veterans' memorials. "Plus, a scouts attitude is to help people - do community projects".

The flag walk will begin at 8:30 a.m. adjacent to the Veterans Memorial Amphitheater. Residents and visitors are seen each year walking through the flags and reading the name displayed on each flag's individual placard.

- The city will hold its Memorial Day Parade on Monday at 10:30 a.m. Fairplay Brass will provide the music. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held at the Legion hall, 33 Center Ave., Plymouth. Sponsored by American Legion Frank H. Nagel Jr. The schedule includes St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, 10 a.m.; Nativity of the Virgin Mary Cemetery, 10:15 a.m.; Immaculate Conception Church, 10:30 a.m.; and Umbria Cemetery, 10:45 a.m. Taps will be played at each of the cemeteries. The color guard will return to Park Elementary Auditorium at 10 a.m. for a service and then march to the Chardon Cemetery for conclusion of the day's ceremonies.

The town will commemorate Memorial Day today with its annual parade, starting at 7 p.m. on Belgrove Drive. VFW Post 5108 will also hold a luncheon following the parades at its location on Pike Street. Parade participants may include patriotic floats or decorated vehicles, antique cars and tractors, kids on decorated bicycles, riding horses that can be controlled in a parade setting, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Little League teams and military service members. A ceremony will be held on the bridge and then the parade will head to Wurster Park where the Manchester High School marching band will play the national anthem during a flag ceremony. The invocation will be given by Pastor Kevin Brophy.
