European Apple Users Can Now Learn Everything the Company Knows About Them

It's arguable that Europe's privacy rules merely build on what has been on the legislative books for decades | Image via iStock

Apple just updated its privacy policy, and on Wednesday it also launched a new website that allows you to correct your personal data or delete your Apple account entirely.

In short, if a service already has proper permission from you, then it doesn't need to get it again.

Parker, an automated chatbot from worldwide law firm Norton Rose Fulbright, can help if you're still figuring out whether your business outside the European Union even needs to comply with GDPR. And if you're still not sure after talking to the bot, it can connect you with one of the firm's lawyers, and can provide you with some food for discussion with any attorney or vendor you might consult with.

Since the checklist is licensed under a Creative Commons license and maintained on open source portal GitHub, you can feel free to tweak it for your own company's needs or even suggest revisions via a pull request if you have your own ideas for how it should be improved. Instapaper says it will be unavailable beginning tomorrow, Thursday, May 24th, as it continues to make GDPR-required changes... If you live in a country or region that's not listed above, you can still contact us to request a copy of the data that you store with Apple.

With GDPR underway, you've probably already received a number of emails alerting you to privacy policy updates, new terms and conditions, and GDPR compliance from numerous sites and services you use online.

GDPR has an extended territorial scope.

Europeans can use the new Data and Privacy web portal to find out what exactly Apple has associated with their accounts.

"The establishment of the data protection directorate as part of the ESO before the EU GDPR comes into force is a big milestone, confirming QFC's commitment to applying the highest standards to the data protection field", according to Luigia Ingianni, commissioner of the ESO at the QFC Authority. Apple says that users should be prepared to wait a week after making their request to receive the data, and the company will send a notification when the records are ready to be downloaded.
