U.S. birth rate drops to another record low

US Fertility Rates Hit Record Lows... Again

According to a provisional report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were about 3.85 million births in the U.S.in 2017.

But the drop could be the result of more women waiting longer to have children.

"This is the third year that the [overall] number of births has declined after an increase in 2014, and the lowest number of births in 30 years", said a team from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The total fertility rate was down 3% to 1,764.5 births per 1,000 women - which the authors noted was the lowest total fertility rate since 1978.

Birth rates declined for almost all age groups of women under 40 years old. Data for 2017 were compared with 2016 data and earlier years.

The low birthweight rate (LBW) also increased in 2017 for the third straight year to 8.27 percent, from 8.17 percent in 2016. On the higher end of the spectrum, provisional birth rates for women ages 45 to 49 remained unchanged, as well. For teenagers aged 15 to 19 years, the birth rate decreased 7 percent in 2017 to 18.8 births per 1,000 women, with decreases in the rates for younger and older teenagers (15 to 17 and 18 to 19, respectively).

Data based on more than 99 percent of USA birth certificates counted 3.853 million births past year, about 92,000 fewer than 2016.

For the third year in a row, the preterm birth rate increased to 9.93 percent.

There was also a slight rise in C-section deliveries.

The CDC report was released online May 17 in a National Vital Statistics System Rapid Release.
