Zia Orphanage Trust graft case: Appellate Division upholds Khaleda's bail

B'desh SC grants bail to ex-PM Zia in graft case

The government had appealed a March verdict by the High Court granting her bail for four months.

"Both the appeals are dismissed", said a four-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, rejecting the appeals filed by the state and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against the High Court order.

Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, serving a five-year jail term in a corruption case, was on Wednesday granted bail by the country's Supreme Court, which upheld a high court order in her favour.

ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told reporters that the Appellate Division has ordered the court to settle the appeal by July 31.

Earlier on February 22, the High Court asked Dhaka Special Judge Court-5, which convicted Khaleda Zia in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, to send the case documents within 15 days. Therefore, she could not be granted bail on health grounds, he said.

The ACC had filed the case on July 3, 2008, against Khaleda, her son Tarique, and four others for misappropriating Tk2.1 crore from the trust fund.

The court in February had also sentenced Zias elder son Tarique Rahman, now in the United Kingdom, and four others to 10 years rigorous imprisonment each, and fined them a total of 2.10 crore taka, saying that all the convicts have to pay the fine in equal amounts.

Zias imprisonment had shook the countrys political scenario ahead of the general elections in December this year.
