What Seattle 'head tax' will cost Amazon

Dick's Drive In was established in Seattle in 1954

The tax only affects companies with more than $20 million in revenue in the city. Publicly traded companies are not required to break out their total employees or revenue per city.

The "head" tax is supposed to fund housing for the homeless.

Mayor Jenny Durkan signed Seattle's controversial new employee tax into law Wednesday evening, her office announced in a press release.

To get enough votes to override a possible veto, five council members who supported the original measure were forced to compromise May 14 with the other four members who were anxious about the impact of a tax on jobs. Amazon's share alone could bring in more than $10 million annually with its 40,000 employees.

Amazon's dissatisfaction with Seattle ups the ante for whichever city gets tapped for the company's second headquarters. Those plans, however, made be put on hold, the company has announced.

Amazon apparently isn't mollified by the passage of the compromise measure.

The company has resumed work on one of the real estate projects it paused, Herdener said, adding, "We remain very apprehensive about the future created by the council's hostile approach and rhetoric toward larger businesses, which forces us to question our growth here".

Seattle also has one of the highest rates of homelessness in the nation.

"Drew Herdener, Amazon vice president, recently released a statement arguing, "[Seattle] does not have a revenue problem - it has a spending efficiency problem". "Better to invest in a different city, perhaps a different state". Per Sawant Amazon is not exclusively to blame for the problem of homelessness in the city though it has employed hardball tactics.

Roughly 585 Seattle businesses will be subject to the tax, according to city documents reviewed by the Seattle Times.

Seattle homelessness has doubled in the last 8 years.

"Amazon has highlighted its desire for strong public transit and affordable housing solutions in HQ2 shortlist cities", the letter says. It replaces what had been a proposed $500-per-head tax.

Of Seattle's largest employers - a group that includes Nintendo, Microsoft, and Expedia - two stand to be hit the hardest: Amazon and Starbucks.

"This is a message to the working people of America from Amazon saying that if you dare to fight us, we will threaten you with taking away jobs".

Assistant Majority Whip Sen.

"I have no qualms putting the Seattle City Council in a hard box", Mullet said. "Looking ahead, I am focused on acting to move people off the street and into safer places, to clean up the garbage and needles that are in our parks and in our communities, and to provide resources to those people experiencing homelessness, including job training, behavioral health services, and other supportive services". "I think [Amazon] will definitely stop or slow its growth in Seattle if the tax passes", she told Geekwire.
