US Senates get enough votes to progress on net neutrality

FCC Chair Ajit Pai's

The FCC approved in December the relaxation of net neutrality rules passed under the Obama administration, allowing much of the control to pass to the FTC under existing consumer protection regulation. "Let's treat the internet like the public good that it is". Chuck Schumer of New York, accompanied by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of Calif., left, Sen.

Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., called it a "highly politicized campaign" that was filled with "fear-mongering hypotheticals, misdirection and outright false claims". "We shouldn't be putting internet access out of reach for Ohioans to pad the pockets of the biggest telecomm executives". John Boozman, R-Ark., said in a written statement. The commissions abrogate of net neutrality is scheduled to come into effect in a few weeks.

It has been just over five months since the FCC in the U.S. voted to dismantle Obama-era net neutrality rules, with three out of five commissioners involved choosing to end the regulation. The final vote was 52-47. They were joined by the two independents who usually vote with them, Sens. Yesterday's vote included three Republicans, including Susan Collins of Maine.

Collins announced her support in January, but Kennedy and Murkowski had been undecided. The CTIA, USTelecom and the NCTA earlier sent a joint letter to senators asking them to vote against the measure. Using the Congressional Review Act, or CRA, senators were able to reverse the decision reached by the government agency. The measure can not be filibustered in the Senate. His reform efforts have previously had support from President Donald Trump, who would need to sign the resolution before it could take effect, in addition to the House approval. "It doesn't make sense to apply outdated rules from 1934 to the Internet, but that's exactly what the prior Administration did". Telecommunications companies oppose the regulations. Keep a watch on the voting for and against net neutrality.

He was expected resume sitting on Tuesday after a hight court nullified his suspension last week but he did not show up.

"Today is a monumental day", said Democratic senator Edward Markey during a debate. Major internet providers such as AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon were prevented from interfering with internet traffic and favoring their own sites and apps.

The 2015 rules were meant to ensure a free and open internet, give consumers equal access to Web content and bar broadband service providers from favoring their own material or others'. Ending net neutrality, they say, could also force consumers to pay more for slower Internet service.

While Democrats recognize they are unlikely to reverse the FCC's rule, they see the issue as a key policy desire that energizes their base voters, a top priority ahead of the midterm elections.
