US Pushes for NAFTA Deal as Thursday Deadline Approaches

Don't expect a NAFTA deal by this week's supposed target date.

As reported by Reuters, Mexico's Economy Minister, Ildefsonso Guajardo, is remaining upbeat that a NAFTA resolution could be had within the next few weeks, though the US' self-imposed deadline of this Thursday doesn't appear set to materialize.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said Congress needs a deal by Thursday in order for it to be approved by the midterm elections.

He says Trudeau told the US president that the ingredients are there for a deal, but Guajardo also says the American side needs to drop some of its impractical proposals.

Merkel: Transatlantic ties must endure dispute about Iran nuclear deal
Finance Minister Olaf Scholz, a Social Democrat, says he envisages the level staying roughly constant "in the coming years".

Sanders did not address the timeline. "He's not going to stop until he gets it".

Ryan himself told reporters at the U.S. Capitol that Congress can not begin working on the negotiating law known as "fast track" without a trade deal in hand.

"The point is, we can't work a bill unless we have an agreement that's in writing that we can work on and that hasn't occurred yet", Ryan told reporters at the U.S. Capitol. Mexico's presidential election will be held in July, and the expected victor could take a harder stance against President Donald Trump and renegotiating the trade deal.

Officials from Canada and Mexico were in D.C. last week working on the terms of a deal, but nothing was reached.
