Hundreds Of Bicyclists Gather In Philly For 'Ride Of Silence'

Proponents of road-sharing can voice their support on Wednesday at the "Ride of Silence" event.

"It's kind of hard to not talk, but really we want our silence to speak volumes", organizer Nikki Northrop Davidson said.

It's organized by the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, which said 11 bicyclists in the Delaware Valley died over the past year from crashes on the road.

Riders who know someone who's been injured or killed in a cycling accident are encouraged to wear black armbands, while those who've experienced injury personally are asked to don red armbands.

The ride is open to everyone.

The Ride of Silence is an worldwide event that aims to honor bicyclists who have been killed or injured on the roadways.

Tonight's ride starts at the parking lot of the uptown Bicycle Post in Greenville and is expected to end around 7:45 p.m. In most cases, the cyclists will be accompanied on city streets by police cars that lead and follow the riders. Helmets and safety lights are required for all riders.

Dozens in Cadillac rode around Lake Cadillac in silence at about 10 miles per hour to bring awareness to a serious cause.

The ride is being held during National Bike Month which seeks to showcase the many benefits of bicycling.

The cyclists took off just after 6 p.m.
