EU Must Defend Firms against US Iran Sanctions: Macron

Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel

Theresa May, Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel have all expressed their desire to see the deal continue but are faced with the prospect of United States sanctions affecting the European countries ability to do business with Iran.

Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, France's President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Theresa May and Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel walk during the EU-Western Balkans Summit in Sofia, Bulgaria, May 17, 2018. "The 2015 deal is an important element of peace and security in the region, and we chose to back it regardless of the USA decision", he stressed.

"International companies with interests in many countries make their own choices according to their own interests".

French President Emmanuel Macron said the bloc was working to keep the existing agreement alive "so that our businesses can remain" in Iran. "They should continue to have this freedom", he said.

Total on Wednesday said it might quit a multi-billion-dollar gas project unless it secured a waiver from USA sanctions.

The United States will re-establish sanctions against Iran progressively, kicking off with the automobile and civil aviation sectors, a source close to the French government said on Tuesday.

"We had a substantive discussion on Iran".

"I don't know the exact timing details, but I am certain that we're also going to shut down (in Iran)", Skou said.

On May 8, US President Donald Trump declared Washington's withdrawal from the JCPOA, a deal that restricted Tehran's nuclear developments in exchange for the abolishment of corresponding sanctions of the UN Security Council and unilateral restrictive measures earlier introduced by the US and EU.

European Union leaders meeting in Sofia have backed a "united" approach to keeping the deal alive after US President Donald Trump pulled out and reimposed sanctions, complaining the accord did nothing to stop Iran's ballistic missile program or interference in Middle East conflicts.
