"Ballistic blocks" shot from Hawaii volcano

When Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupted in 1959, it shot lava higher than the tallest building in America

Despite the mesmerizing site, the U.S. Geological Survey warned residents of an imminent eruption and "significant emission of ash" after upgrading its previous volcano warning from "orange" to "red".

The powerful, steam-driven blast was expected to spew large amounts of volcanic ash and smoke from Kilauea's crater on Hawaii's Big Island. The volcano has destroyed 37 homes and other structures in a small southeast area of the island and forced around 2,000 people to evacuate their homes.

The summit explosion of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano created booming sounds in the nearby town of Pahoa and resident Toby Hazel says she's had enough and is preparing to leave town. As jarring as it is spectacular, a towering ash cloud is just the latest Kilauea hazard.

Several fissures shot lava into the air on Wednesday but the flow from number 17 had not advanced any further toward coastal Highway 137, which remains around a mile distant, County of Hawaii Civil Defense said in a statement.

Feustal wrote: "It is easy to see the activity on Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano from the International Space Station". The National Weather Service issued an ash advisory until noon. The crater sits within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which has been closed since May 11 in preparation for an eruption.

Before and after satellite images provided by DigitalGlobe show an area by the Kilauea volcano near Pahoa, Hawaii, on May 24, 2017 compared to May 14, 2018. Scientists predicted it would mostly release trapped steam from flash-heated groundwater released as though it was a kitchen pressure cooker.

Strong earthquakes within the summit of Kīlauea Volcano continue in response to ongoing deflation and lava column drop.

Hara says there are now about 1,200 soldiers and nine UH-60 helicopters now training on the Big Island.
