White House ditches cyber coordinator role

White House Eliminates A Top Cybersecurity Post

The Trump administration on Tuesday eliminated the cybersecurity coordinator position on the National Security Council, the job central to developing policy to defend against computer attacks.

The elimination of the cyber coordinator job marked the latest of several changes to the National Security Council since President Donald Trump named Bolton his national security adviser. "Streamlining management will improve efficiency, reduce bureaucracy and increase accountability".

According to an email sent to National Security Council employees seen by Politico, the decision is part of an effort to "streamline authority" for the senior directors who lead most NSC teams. Jim Langevin (D-RI) and Ted Lieu (D-CA) introduced, would create a permanent director of cybersecurity policy within the White House, a position that would coordinate cyber policy measures across the many government agencies and recommend security measures and budgets for those agencies, in collaboration with the administration.

"The role of cyber coordinator will end", Bolton aide Christine Samuelian emailed to staff, Politico reported.

"With our two Senior Directors for Cybersecurity, cyber coordination is already a core capability", the announcement read.

Allardyce sacked as Everton manager
Everton appointed Allardyce as manager with the club stuck in a rut at the start of the Premier League season. Asked about the situation, Allardyce hit out at the club.

The decision to do away with the role was met by criticism by government officials and cybersecurity experts, who fear that the Trump administration won't be ready to handle the increasing cybersecurity threats the U.S. is facing - from hacking of digital election systems to cyber penetration efforts by Russian and Iranian hackers.

"We should be investing in our nation's cyber defense, not rolling it back".

Asked about the position at a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing on Tuesday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said she had not discussed the decision with Bolton. "We also need to articulate a clear cyber doctrine", Sen.

The White House didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
