The funeral of Alfie Evans passes Everton football ground Goodison Park, Liverpool

Alfie's parents had campaigned to save his life

Alfie's coffin sported images of toy soldiers and the Everton motif.

His case drew worldwide attention when it became the centre of a High Court legal battle over his care.

Alfie's Everton-supporting dad, Tom Evans, sat in the vehicle in front of the tiny coffin carrying his son from a private funeral to his final resting place.

Alfie Evans tragically died aged 23 months old, after battling with a degenerative brain condition.

Flowers, pictures and messages left outside Everton's Goodison Park as the cortege of Alfie Evans goes past the ground in Liverpool.

Tributes were left outside the stadium at the bottom of a statue of famous Evertonian Dixie Dean. Sleep well wee man.

The terminally ill toddler, who was in a semi-vegetative state from a degenerative condition that medics were not able to definitively identify, died in hospital on April 28.

LONDON Hundreds of mourners have gathered in Liverpool to say goodbye to Alfie Evans, the British toddler whose parents fought an unsuccessful legal battle to keep him on life support.

His parents, Thomas Evans and Kate James, wanted to take Alfie to a hospital in Rome, Italy, to continue his treatment in the hope he would recover.

A key argument presented by Evans, 21, and James, 20, "was that they should decide what is best for their son", adds the broadcaster.

A separate vigil was held in Liverpool's Springfield Park last Wednesday to mark what would have been Alfie's second birthday. His parents had wanted to take him overseas to Italy for further treatment - but doctors said further treatment was futile and his life support was withdrawn last month.
