Senate votes today on rollback of net neutrality rollback

Senate Votes To Restore Net Neutrality

The FCC's new regulation, effectively eliminating net neutrality as the internet's governing policy, has still not taken effect, providing Democrats this narrow opening.

The Congressional Review Act resolution to restore net neutrality rules, which were reversed by the FCC past year, will be brought to the Senate floor on Wednesday.

The resolution targets the FCC's vote in December to repeal its net neutrality rules for Internet providers. A final vote by the Senate was expected later on Wednesday. Or will they stick to the party and leave it to be decided by a tie-breaker vote nearly certain to go in their favor? Fifty senators have declared their support for it - one shy of the majority needed to pass it. "A vote against this resolution will be a vote to protect large corporations and special interests, leaving the American public to pay the price", explains Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer in a statement on Monday.

The US Senate is voting Wednesday on whether to put the Federal Communications Commission's net-neutrality rules back in place.

The agency's two Democrats at the time, Mignon Clyburn and Jessica Rosenworcel, voted to keep the rules on the books. The Open Internet Order prohibited internet service providers from blocking, slowing down, or discriminating against content online.

Net neutrality, which forces private companies to provide equal access to the Internet, is expected to be a major campaign issue Democrats will use in the 2018 midterm elections, not least for its importance to young people. It also hands off to the Federal Trade Commission the job of making sure the providers abide by the terms they've disclosed and to watch out for anti-competitive behavior on their part.

The Broward County school district is the sixth largest in the nation and the second largest in Florida. Alhadeff is a former classroom teacher in New Jersey and has a master's degree in education.

This wouldn't be the end of the effort's struggles, however, as it is unknown whether the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives will even vote on the issue or President Trump would impart his required signature on the matter.

That the FCC overturned its net-neutrality rules was no surprise.

Senator Maggie Hassan today visited Stonyfield Farm, Inc., where she met with employees to discuss the negative impact that repealing net neutrality would have on businesses across New Hampshire.

For almost all of the past 10 years, the FCC has had in place rules that sought to guarantee net-neutrality protections. Ajit Pai, the new chairman appointed by President Donald Trump, made clear that he opposed them and would seek to eliminate them when he took over as the FCC's head. "May 16 will be the most important vote for the internet in the history of the Senate, and I call on my Republicans colleagues to join this movement and stand on the right side of digital history".

However, net-neutrality supporters are also seeking to overturn the FCC's action in federal courts and pushing measures that would offer net-neutrality protections within a state's borders.
