Peru captain Guerrero banned from World Cup in doping case

Peru's forward Paolo Guerrero

The ban, backdated to November, was reduced to six months less than two weeks later after the player protested to FIFA's appeal committee, meaning he was eligible for the World Cup.

The top court for global sports dealt a blow to Peru's chances at the World Cup next month on Monday when it upheld a ban on the soccer team's captain following a positive doping test.

Guerrero arrived from Brazil on Tuesday to a Lima airport crowded with supporters after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld an appeal to extend his ban to January.

The 34-year-old tested positive for cocaine after the qualifier against Argentina on 6 October.

Peru is in Group C with Australia, Denmark and France.

The player and his representatives have claimed he was not taking any drug and was accidentally consumed through tea, according to AS.

Is Facebook Doing Enough to Stop Bad Content? You Be the Judge
Most of the content was found and flagged before users had a chance to spot it and alert the platform. For years, Facebook has relied on users to report offensive and threatening content.

The FIFA AC had considered that Mr Guerrero had been able to establish that the adverse analytical finding had been caused by the ingestion of a tea containing the prohibited substance.

"However, the panel considered that the player did bear some fault or negligence, even if it was not significant, and that he could have taken some measures to prevent him from committing the (doping violations)", the court said. They questioned the CAS's intentions for the ban despite admitting that Guerrero was not significantly negligent and his intention was not to enhance his performance.

The news comes as a blow to the Peruvian national team, who are set to play in their first FIFA World Cup since 1982, who had named Guerrero in their provisional squad just yesterday.

Federation Internationale de Football Association initially suspended Guerrero for one year through November 3.

Guerrero - of Bayern Munich, Hamburg and Corinthians fame - is Peru's all-time leading goalscorer with a record of 32 strikes in 86 appearances.

Bolivia fielded an ineligible player in a 2-0 win over Peru, and that result was overturned to a 3-0 loss by default. It ended on May 3, making Guerrero eligible to play at the June 14-July 15 World Cup in Russian Federation. Without the three extra points, Peru would have fallen below Chile and Paraguay in the standings and out of contention.
