Kami Rita Sherpa scales Mount Everest for record 22nd time

Nepalese veteran Sherpa guide Kami Rita 48 climbed Mount Everest for the record 22nd time

Ang Kami Sherpa's 22nd ascent to the summit created a new record for the most visits to the peak of Everest, Reuters reported.

Most hopefuls are escorted by a Nepali guide, meaning about 700 climbers will tread the same path to the top of the 8,850-metre (29,035-foot) peak in the coming weeks.

A 44-year-old woman, Lhakpa Sherpa, who lives in Connecticut, United States, climbed for the ninth time on Wednesday, breaking her own record of the most summits by a woman, her Nepali hiking company said.

Officials said Kami Rita reached the summit on Wednesday with a team of foreign climbers, while Lakpa Sherpa reached the peak from the Chinese side. Phurba Tashi, 47, retired from high-altitude climbing in 2013 but still works at Everest's base camp, helping organise expeditions.

The next most accomplished female Everest climber is American Melissa Sue Arnot, who has reached the top six times.

Kami Rita first scaled Everest at age 24, and has made the trip nearly every year since then.

This year, her climb was sponsored by the outfitter Black Diamond, who provided gear and monetary support.

Sherpa climbed the Everest for the 21st time in 2017.

A Sherpa guide has been missing on Everest's southern side in Nepal since Monday, said Mingma of Seven Summits.

Dozens of climbers are expected to reach the summit on Wednesday, taking advantage of the good weather on the mountain, according to Shrestha.

"They are searching for him on the way down", he said of the team that has just summited.

The problems occurred during what is being described as the third "summit wave" of climbers pushing towards the summit in this pre-monsoon season, after the ropes were fixed from both the Nepalese and Tibetan sides of the mountain.
