U.S. pullout from Iran N-deal: India to safeguard interests

German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier said Friday Berlin was ready help its firms continue doing business in Iran in the face of looming U.S. sanctions.

The U.S. hope is that Iran will be dragged to the table by the resumption of U.S. sanctions - and possibly the imposition of more - which would penalise European and other companies and likely cripple Iran's oil-driven economy.

But Pompeo said Washington was keen to thrash out a more wide-ranging deal with its allies as another top official said Iran had been "on the march" throughout the Middle East since the nuclear agreement was signed.

The deal was negotiated between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States - plus Germany.

Despite the USA exit, Britain and Iran expressed their commitment to ensuring that the accord is upheld, according to a statement released by British Prime Minister Theresa May's office.

The meeting, which will also be attended by the German and French foreign ministers, has been convened by European Union high representative for foreign affairs Federica Mogherini.

Germany said it would spend the next few months trying to persuade Washington to change its mind.

As they grapple with the short-term threat of US sanctions, European officials are debating how to protect the bloc in the long term against the overseas reach of American law.

Days after its controversial decision to pull the USA out of the Iran deal, the White House is condemning an Iranian rocket attack on Israeli-occupied land, the latest in a heated escalation between the longtime Middle East adversaries. However, the long effect will depend on How other countries react to U.S. actions.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signalled his disapproval of US President Donald Trump's withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear agreement with Iran.

In a tweet on Sunday, Trump wrote: "Remember how badly Iran was behaving with the Iran Deal in place". I did not always agree with all of their decisions, but I always felt that they had my country's best interest at heart until now. "Now, that will not happen!"

In contrast to President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who have accused Iran of breaching the rules of the Iran Nuclear Deal, Mr Marandi said: "Over the past three years, the United States has been repeatedly violating the JCPOA". His reasoning is that he did not like the deal, it was a very bad deal.

French President Emmanuel Macron, meanwhile, went a step further and argued that Europe can not accept Trump's decision, but follow its own values. But in an interview on ABC's "This Week" program, Bolton said: "That's not the policy of the administration". He must craft a treaty with Iran that keeps its nuclear weapons program dormant, clamps down on its support of terrorism, ends its ballistic weapons tests, is verifiable and can get through Congress.
