Renowned author Tom Wolfe dies at 88

Tom Wolfe ‘The New Journalism’ author dead at 87

Described as a "chronicler and satirist of American culture", Wolfe believed that the only way to tell a great story was to go out and report it.

Multiple outlets credit Wolfe as a creator of "New Journalism", a style that combined traditional reporting and immersive writing.

Around this time, he began working as a journalist, moving to New York in 1962 for a position at The New York Herald Tribune. His first novel, Bonfire of the Vanities, arrived in 1987, skewering the excesses of the money-hungry 1980s. While the book was not universally well regarded by the critical press, it was an enormous financial success.

Wolfe followed with "I Am Charlotte Simmons" which recounts the tale of an ambitious girl from a family of modest means in the rural south as she navigates the social and academic world of an elite East Coast university.

In a career spanning more than half a century, Wolfe wrote fiction and non-fiction bestsellers, starting with The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby (1965). "But now he will no longer belong to us. He has married his large talent to real money and very few can do that or allow themselves to do that". He graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1951 and later received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1957.

Tom Wolfe was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1930.

"They'd been invisible right up to the moment someone or something told me that the books on them were stuffed with dirty words and shocking behavior - a rumor whose truth was eventually confirmed by 'Portnoy's Complaint, '" Wolfe told writer Michael Lewis in a 2015 interview for Vanity Fair.

Wolfe is survived by Sheila Wolfe, his wife of almost 40 years; a son, Tommy Wolfe, and a daughter, Alexandra Wolfe.
