Apple CEO Tim Cook praises Parkland, 'Me Too' activists in commencement speech

Apple's Tim Cook tells graduates to be fearless

"We reject the notion that getting the most out of technology means trading away your right to privacy, so we choose a different path: collecting as little of your data as possible, and being thoughtful and respectful when it's in our care".

He also appeared take yet another jab at Facebook and its handling of user data. We weighed in on the growing tech divide in a recent cover story. "There is a lot more work to be done to find all the apps that may have misused people's Facebook data-and it will take time", Archibong said.

Cook's calculus is shrewd: His underlying argument, tucked within the speech, is a reminder that Apple considers itself a trustworthy and socially responsible employer, which plays well in the Silicon Valley recruiting wars. As for how he would handle such a privacy concern, Cook has said that such a scenario isn't possible for his company.

The comment echoed Cook's earlier criticism of Facebook, which has endured months of criticism after it was revealed that a political data analytics firm, Cambridge Analytica, was able to harvest data for almost 90 million Facebook users. Cook took over as Apple's CEO following Jobs's 2011 death, and has since overseen the company's rise to the largest publicly traded company in the USA with a $752 billion net worth.

Apple had no comment on Cook's speech, but the company has insisted in the past that its message about privacy has been consistent for almost a decade.

Cook, who graduated with an MBA in 1988 from Duke's Fuqua business school, also warned of the impending dangers of climate change and Americans' inability to listen to challenging opinions.
