Eight children were among those killed during violent clashes on the Israel-Gaza border during protests over the opening of the USA embassy in Jerusalem, according to the Palestinian envoy to the UN.

Israeli gunfire killed over 50 Palestinians in the ongoing Monday clashes - the highest toll in a single day since a series of protests demanding the right to return to ancestral homes began on March 30. More than two thousand others were wounded in the riots.

Egypt and Jordan's leaders have both condemned the action by Israel's forces. "Moving the embassy as soon as possible would appropriately commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Jerusalem's reunification and show the world that the US definitively acknowledges Jerusalem as Israel's capital".

Mr Trump's recognition of contested Jerusalem as Israel's capital in December outraged Palestinians, who said the USA could no longer serve as an honest broker in any peace process with Israel. Earlier he visited the Western Wall, met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and called it a "great day for Florida, Israel, and the United States". The targets included military training facilities belonging to Hamas. Scores were killed in the protests. "This is a propaganda attempt", Shah said.

"We believe Hamas bears the responsibility".

The timing of Monday's events was deeply symbolic to Israel and the Palestinians. The U.S. said it chose the date to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Israel's establishment.

Over 35,000 protesters marched towards the border fence, coming within several hundred metres.

"We are excited to storm and get inside", 23-year-old Mohammed Mansoura told The Washington Post, explaining that he would do "whatever is possible ... kill, throw stones" if he made it through.

Abul Gheit said the move "represents an extremely risky step" and "I don't think the American administration realises its real implications in the short and long terms".

The formal dedication of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem on Monday outraged Palestinians, but it's not the only reason for the deadly, weeks-long demonstrations along Israel's border with Gaza. Hamas said four members, including three security men, were among the dead Monday. "Congratulations!" Trump tweeted this morning. Leaflets dropped over Gaza by army jets warned that those approaching the border "jeopardize" their lives.

Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, an Israeli military spokesman, said the army had bolstered its border forces and added security in and around neighboring communities to defend against a mass breach.

The ceremony took place at what until now had been a USA consulate building in Jerusalem. Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan and Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin headed the USA delegation to Jerusalem. Mass protests have broken out again in response to the moving of the USA embassy to Jerusalem, recently recognized by the U.S.as Israel's capital. Previous presidents had signed a waiver postponing the move, citing national security.

Palestinians seek East Jerusalem as the capital of a state they hope to establish in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Protesters, many wearing skullcaps and black T-shirts stating that "the Jewish future demands Palestinian freedom", sang "We will build this world with love".

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas has cut ties with the Trump administration and declared it unfit to mediate peace talks. Clearly this is a recognition of a very clear reality.

The new embassy opened with prayers after which Trump gave a recorded message.

The health officials said 900 Palestinians were wounded, about 450 of them by live bullets, Gulf News reported.

"I came here to say thank you to President Trump", Haas said, adding that he has no sympathy for the Palestinians being shot along the border. "It is also the right thing to do".

Jerusalem's status is perhaps the thorniest issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Only two countries, Guatemala and Paraguay, have said they will follow suit.

Diplomats moved there from tel Aviv.

As part of celebrations leading up to the embassy's formal opening, Israel hosted a gala party at its Foreign Ministry with Trump's daughter Ivanka, her husband, Jared Kushner, and other American VIPs. Kushner leads the Trump Mideast team.
