NESO protests Citizenship Bill, NIFJ seeks abortion

Prafulla Kumar Mahanta in Guwahati on Thursday

Concerned by the large scale public outrage in Assam against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, the Assam Government on Friday tried to quell the fire and said that the BJP led Government is not going to do anything that affects the interest of the State.

The All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU) has raised objection to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, saying if the Bill is passed, it will have large-scale ramifications for Arunachal Pradesh, a 100 per cent tribal state. "We will organise the signature campaign across Assam till May 30", Asom Gana Parishad President Atul Bora said.

The North East Students' Organi-sation (NESO) today staged a protest demonstration at Dughali Pukhri, Guwahati against the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 which purportedly seeks to grant Indian citizenship to illegal immigrants from different foreign countries.

The NRC is being prepared to identify illegal migrants in Assam and its first draft has been published on December 31 past year.

"I will seriously think about the suggestions given by you all here and as advised, I will also discuss the matter with senior citizens and intellectuals in the coming days", he said. "We will not take any decision that goes against the people of Assam". The state government will not take any decision that is inimical to the interests of people.

The situation prevailing in the state over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 has made it imperative for the House to pass without delay a pending private member's resolution in question, which was moved by Congress member Abdul Khaleque, Saikia said.

"The JPC has also not asked for our opinion".

Conservative clerics: Rouhani must apologize for Iran nuclear deal

He said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was following the democratic norms despite having a majority in the Lok Sabha.

"When Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal) Act, 1983 was imposed on Assam, did the then Congress government take the views of the people of Assam?" The Accord marked the end of anti-foreigner movement - anyone who entered the state after the midnight of March 24, 1971, would be considered an illegal immigrant, irrespective of their faith.

The JPC's three-day hearing in Assam since Monday saw the State being divided on the issue.

"The proposed bill is the latest example that "lawmakers of the country have no regard for the future of the North-eastern region", Jyrwa said".

In the Bengali-dominated Barak Valley, most of the 315 points of feedback given to the parliamentary committee were in favour of the bill, news agency Press Trust of India reported.

AASU, bodies representing other indigenous groups, the All Assam Muslim Students' Union, and political parties, including BJP ally AGP, Badruddin Ajmal's AIUDF and Congress, have submitted that the "Assam Accord" is sacrosanct.

Following the JPC hearings, protests have been taking place on a daily basis in the Brahmaputra valley against the Bill.
