Mercedes-AMG GT S Roadster

Mercedes-AMG GT S Roadster 2018

Mercedes-AMG have debuted their latest variant of the AMG GT line with the AMG GT S Roadster which slots nicely between the standard GT and second highest specced GT C. Unsurprisingly, this number sits between the estimated time of 3.6 seconds for the GT C Roadster and 3.9 seconds for the base model. It's the third variant to join Affalterbach's drop-top sports auto lineup, and it sits between the current GT and GT C in terms of performance and price.

Power goes to the rear wheels through an AMG Speedshift seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and the GT S also features a sportier suspension set-up, complete with adaptive damping as standard, and there's an electronically controlled locking rear diff.

Again finding middle ground, the AMG GT S Roadster weighs 1625kg, which is 55kg over its roofed GT S sibling.

Mercedes-AMG offer the AMG high-performance composite braking system as standard with an AMG high-performance ceramic composite braking system available as an optional extra. The acceleration figure matches the GT S coupe though the top speed is 1 miles per hour lower.

As with the tin-top, the Roadster has an aluminium-intensive body and structure, while the three-layered soft-top roof is supported by a lightweight structure of magnesium, steel and aluminium. Additional roll-over protection is provided by an integrated aluminum cross-member, while the inserted acoustic mat improves noise comfort.

The power unit is what really differentiates the AMG GT S Roadster. In the rear, there are 14.2-inch brake discs and single-piston fixed calipers. While the AMG Silver Chrome Interior package is available as standard, owners can also opt for the carbon fibre or high gloss black trims for the AMG trim elements.

The company did not announce a price, but CNET expects the price to slide in between the $125,000 GT and the $157,000 GT S. Does $140,000 to $145,000 sound about right?
