Double Amputee Climber Conquers Everest, Where He Lost His Feet Decades Earlier

First climbers of 2018 reach Everest summit

On Monday, supported by a team of Sherpa guides, Xia reached the summit in what the Himalayan Times says is the first successful double amputee climb from the Nepal side.

He later lost his lower legs to blood cancer. "It also represents a personal challenge, a challenge of fate", Xia told AFP last month before heading to the mountain.

The achievement is incredibly impressive considering Xia's initial attempt - 43 years ago - resulted in severe frost bite which required the amputation of both of his feet. Xia is the first double-amputee to summit from the Nepalese side of the mountain.

Mark Joseph Inglis of New Zealand is the first double leg amputee to summit the world's tallest peak from the Chinese side. But, Xia received permission in March this year when the government overturned the decision by calling it "discriminatory" toward people with disabilities. We've done it! We're on the summit of Everest!

Xia Boyu, a 69-year-old hit by frostbite on Everest over four decades ago, and Steve Plain, who was almost paralysed by an accident four years ago, were among the first to summit the world's highest mountain.

A group of eight Nepalese Sherpa guides reached the summit of Mount Everest on Sunday, fixing ropes and clearing paths for other climbers to begin their ascent to the peak, a government official said.

Nepal has issued 346 permits to mountaineers for this year's spring climbing season, which runs from mid-April to the end of May.

Plain's Global Positioning System tracker also showed he had stood atop the 8,848 metre (29,030 foot) mountain. They did so while they were getting acclimated to the environment in preparation for a climb up both Lhotse and Everest-a mission they now may not get to complete.

"When people realise they are causing a traffic jam, you'd like they'd have the courtesy to find a staff spot to step aside and let others pass".
