Oral Antibiotics Could Be Responsible For Dramatic Increase Of Kidney Stones

Antibiotics May Raise the Risk for Kidney Stones

While diet trends, such as more soda and caffeine, and less water are likely factors, the doctor's team chose to look at common medications, like antibiotics, which are prescribed to children much more than adults. This is the first time that these drugs are associated with this disease.

After controlling for urinary tract infections, medications, diseases like gout and diabetes, and other variables, they found that exposure to any of five classes of antibiotics significantly increased the risk for kidney stones.

According to a new study, it is suggested that consuming antibiotics on a regular basis can get you into the risks of kidney stones.

Tasian, Denburg and colleagues published their study today in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

Results Exposure to any of five different antibiotic classes 3-12 months before index date was associated with nephrolithiasis. After getting through the health reports of over 13.9 million patients, the researchers came to the conclusion that children and adults who consumed antibiotics frequently are more prone towards risks of kidney stones.

China's First Home-Built Carrier Sets Out for Sea Trials
The sea trials will maily test the reliability and stability of the carrier's power system and other equipment, sources said. With the induction of INS Vikrant and "Type 001A", both India and China will have two operational aircraft carriers.

"We're dealing with a risk-benefit relationship, and we want to make sure that antibiotics are prescribed without unnecessarily increasing adverse health outcomes", he said. The drugs ranged from broad-spectrum penicillins, which increased the risk by 27 percent, to sulfa drugs, which were associated with more than double the risk. We used incidence density sampling to match 25,981 patients with nephrolithiasis to 259,797 controls by age, sex, and practice at date of diagnosis (index date).

Gregory E. Tasian, pediatric urologist who conducted the study, said in a statement that the overall prevalence of kidney stones has increased 70% over the last thirty years, with particularly strong increases in teenagers and young women.

Scientist are already aware that antibiotics alter the composition of the human microbiome, or the community of microorganisms in the body. These risks were more visible in children and adolescents.

Tasian pointed out that other researchers have found that roughly 30 percent of antibiotics prescribed in office visits are inappropriate, and children receive more antibiotics than any other age group, so the new findings reinforce the need for clinicians to be careful in prescribing correct antibiotics. Disruptions in the intestinal and urinary microbiome have been linked to the occurrence of kidney stones, but no previous studies revealed an association between antibiotic usage and stones.
