Congo says another suspected death in latest Ebola outbreak

Liberia Turns Towards Normalcy As Fight Continues To Eradicate Ebola

This week, reported that Ebola has returned to Africa via DR Congo and on Thursday, Nigeria announced it is taking measures to secure its borders against the Ebola virus disease. The WHO was informed Wednesday of four new suspected cases there, two of whom are health care workers.

The two Ebola cases were confirmed as the Zaire strain after officials in the capital, Kinshasa, were alerted early this month to the deaths of 17 people from a hemorrhagic fever and traveled to the Bikoro area to perform tests.

The WHO's expert advisers on vaccines have said in the past that they should be offered vaccination during an outbreak-and Formenty said he expects that to happen this time.

The disease has a high risk of killing between 25 and 90 percent of those infected, due to low blood pressure from fluid loss, and typically follows six to sixteen days after symptoms appear. They are using the same approach taken during a successful response to an EVD outbreak past year. The government immediately alerted the people about the outbreak.

According to Adewole, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has begun the coordination of a national working group to assess and manage the risk posed by the virus in the DRC to Nigeria.

This is the ninth Ebola outbreak in DRC since 1976, when the deadly disease was first identified.

"At the moment, there is an experienced MSF team in Bikoro, made up of medics, water and sanitation experts, health promoters, logisticians, and an epidemiologist", Julien Raickman, MSF head of the mission in the DRC, said in the statement.

Prevention includes limiting the spread of the disease from infected animals to humans.

Salama said the strain raging in Bikoro was the Zaire strain, which also was responsible for the recent west Africa epidemic that killed more than 11,300 people.

A Liberian pharmacist prepares an Ebola vaccine to be given in the vaccine trials, which were launched at Redemption Hospital, formerly an Ebola holding center, on February 2, 2015 in Monrovia, Liberia.

The WHO is meanwhile awaiting a green light from DRC authorities to begin a vaccination campaign in the area, using an available stockpile of an experimental vaccine.

World Health Organization has shared risk communication materials in French and Lingala with the World Health Organization country offices.

"We are very concerned, and we are planning for all scenarios, including the worst case scenario", WHO´s head of emergency response Peter Salama told reporters in Geneva.
