Mount Io goes silent after first eruption in 250 years

Volcano Erupts In Japan Govt Issues'No-go Warning

A volcano in southern Japan has erupted for the first time in 250 years, and authorities have set up a no-go zone around the mountain.

Japan's meteorological agency declared the entire mountain off limits on Friday, even though explosions had subsided.

"There is a possibility that (the volcano) will become more active", he told reporters, warning people to stay away from the volcano as major ash deposits spread from the crater.

Television footage showed grayish smoke jetting from several spots on the side of the mountain in the Kirishima range, in a rural area about 985 km (616 miles) from Tokyo.

The meteorological agency detected volcanic activity on Mount Io in February, and raised the warning level to 2.

The eruption occurred at around 3.39 pm local time, shooting smoke and rocks into the air. No one was reported injured, the local government said.

The other volcano nearby disappeared in March for its first time in seven decades.

Japan sits in the Pacific Ocean's "Ring of Fire" and has 110 active volcanoes, according to the AP. In January, a military member was killed after the eruption of Kusatsu-Shirane volcano in central Japan.

An estimated 63 people were killed in the shock eruption which occurred as the peak was packed with hikers out to see the region's spectacular autumn colours.
