Karnataka polls: FIR against BJP MLA for 'Hindu vs Muslim' remark

BJP MLA Sanjay Patil represents the Belagavi Rural constituency in north Karnataka near the border with Maharashtra

Patil, while addressing a gathering in Belgaum on Thursday, said that the upcoming election in the state is not about roads, water or other issues but about Hindus versus Muslims and Ram Mandir versus Babri Masjid.

He further said in his speech, "I am Sanjay Patil, I am Hindu, this is a Hindu Rashtra (nation) and we intend to build Ram temple".

Belagavi police have registered a case against MLA and BJP candidate Sanjay Patil for his poll campaign speeches considered communally sensitive.

"This election is not about roads, water or other issues". "(Those) who want to construct Babri Masjid, who want to celebrate Tipu Sultan's jayanti, let them vote for Congress", he said. "This election is about Hindu and Muslim religions", Patil had told the crowd.

Patil also told the crowd that the Congress favoured constructing a mosque in Ayodhya instead of a Ram temple.
