WWII bomb to force evacuation around Berlin's main station

Authorities carried out a controlled explosion on the bomb at around 12:20pm this afternoon.

Berlin's main railway station has reopened.

The bomb was discovered during construction work near the city's central train station. But not generally this close to the city center, we're 300-400 meters from the main train station.

Police asked residents to stay with family or friends or to head to one of two emergency shelters set up at nearby schools but reassured residents that the bomb was "safe for now" and "there is no immediate danger".

Buildings were evactuated from 8am in an 800m (2,625ft) radius from where the bomb was found.

Berlin's famous Charité university hospital and a military hospital were partly shut down.

The Berlin Fire Department also posted on Twitter saying it was meeting with Berlin police to discuss the plan for defusing the bomb.

"This is a common occurence in Berlin, obviously there were a lot of unexploded bombs here".
