PM May says 'Windrush generation' migrants are 'part of us'

Twitter MV Empire Windrush arrives as Tilbury Docks in June 1948

Among them was the Jamaican-British campaigner Sam Beaver King, who died in 2016 aged 90, and arrived at Tilbury Docks before finding work as a postman.

Many of those from the Windrush generation, named after the vessel which carried the first post-war immigrants from the Caribbean in 1948, never sought official documents confirming their status. Today some of the descendants of the Windrush Generation have been deemed "illegal immigrants" and have been asked to provide documentary evidence of their life in Britain, which they had not been previously required to keep and in some cases were threatened with deportation.

"And the overwhelming majority of the Windrush generation do have the documents that they need, but we are working hard to help those who do not".

As they watch the developments around the Windrush scandal, many have come to feel only more anxiety about their situation. Also, many who travelled as children did so on their parents' passports.

However, JRS UK has always been drawing attention to the aggressive web of policies that constitute the hostile environment agenda, and sees the same cruelty meted out to asylum seekers as faced by the Windrush-era citizens.

Those who failed to do so were wrongly treated as an illegal or undocumented immigrant.

"It has resulted in some people through no fault of their own having to provide evidence of their right to live here".

The Windrush recreated during the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony.

"We would like to encourage the United Kingdom government to use records at its disposal such as school, health, and tax records and that there be a presumption of legal residence on the part of the Windrush Generation while their cases are being reviewed and that these individuals continue to benefit from access to medical care, employment, and other services", said Holness.

At the House of Commons, Labour MP, David Lammy, blasted Amber Rudd, laying the blame firmly on Tory policies.

Heir to the throne Prince Charles will not automatically succeed her as head of the Commonwealth, which says the choice of its next leader will be a decision for the group.

Labour has called on Home Secretary Amber Rudd to consider her position after she was forced to apologise to members of the "Windrush generation" over challenges to their migration status.

May apologised for the Windrush Generation debacle while meeting with Caribbean leaders who are attending the Commonwealth summit in London. As the UK's prime minister, she said "I deeply regret both the fact that such laws were introduced and the legacy of discrimination violence and even death that persists today".

"Theresa May's apology to Caribbean leaders over the "anxiety" caused - together with the Government response on Monday, which included updating some short guidance about the circumstances of these people - is woefully inadequate".

"I want to dispel any impression that my government is in some sense clamping down on Commonwealth citizens, particularly those from the Caribbean".
