Deadly auto bombings 'to deter chemical weapons investigations' hit Douma

Activists worry US airstrikes won't deter Assad: 'Mission not accomplished'

A United Nations official says a U.N. team on a security mission to the site of a suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria was sacked upon and had to return to its base in Damascus.

Over a week after a horrific chemical attack killed dozens of people in the Syrian town of Douma, the Associated Press reports that inspectors have arrived to investigate the details of the April 7 attack.

The say the airstrikes last Saturday by the three nations were "limited, proportionate and necessary" and followed "only after exhausting every possible diplomatic option to uphold the global norm against the use of chemical weapons". "They were not injured and returned to Damascus". It sends the wrong message to all freedom- loving people around the world who are looking to the United States for moral leadership. As they spoke, government troops were not far away but out of earshot. Several said a unusual smell started spreading and people screamed, "It's chlorine!"

The officials said that while the available information is much greater on the chlorine use, they also had significant information that also points to use of sarin, which is a nerve agent.

"What (Trump) has done is talked to our allies and said they need to step up more".

Journalists were allowed access to the suspected attack sites on Monday, but the OPCW said Syrian and Russian authorities blocked the inspectors.

The move signalled the West's resolve to return to diplomacy after a one-night military operation that hit sites Western officials said were linked to Syria's chemical weapons program.

The OPCW is not tasked with assigning blame, only establishing whether chemical weapons were used, and if so, which ones.

Mr Filatov said the suspected chemical attack had "definitely been staged", and said images had been "fabricated".

There was no comment from the OPCW or the United Nations on Wednesday.

At the time of the alleged attack, Douma was held by the Jaysh al-Islam (Army of Islam).

Rebels and monitors say chemical weapons were used in the rebel-held town on April 7, killing at least 70 people, while the Syrian regime as well as its Russian backers say the attack was fabricated.

Experts arrived in Damascus on Saturday, but they have been unable to visit the nearby town of Douma because of "security issues" cited by Russian Federation.
