Trump orders putting off new sanctions against Russian Federation - newspaper

The guided missile cruiser USS Monterey fires a Tomahawk missile in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations against Syria over its chemical weapons use

On CBS's "Face the Nation", Haley said the Treasury Department will announce the new sanctions and insisted the U.S. has sent "a strong message" about the use of chemical weapons.

United States' Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Sunday the Trump administration will announce more sanctions against Russian Federation as soon as Monday.

Joint airstrikes were launched in Syria by the US, UK and France on Saturday as punishment for a suspected chemical weapons attack in Douma.

"The United States won't be pulling troops out of Syria right away", she said, adding the U.S. involvement there "is not done". "Secretary Mnuchin will be announcing those on Monday, if he hasn't already". While he declared success, the Pentagon said the pummeling of three chemical-related facilities left enough others intact to enable the Assad government to use banned weapons against civilians if it chooses. And so I think everyone is going to feel it at this point.

"It's not something we're going to tolerate and they've got to make a decision", she added.

After the Kremlin complained about the new sanctions, Trump told his national security team later Sunday that he was upset the sanctions were being put into place because he was not comfortable with them, sources told the paper.

The WH is reporting that Trump would not approve any additional sanctions without another triggering event by Russian Federation, and characterized Haley's comments as a misstatement.

The report also quoted an unnamed Russian Foreign Ministry official saying the Administration had informed the Russian Embassy in Washington "the sanctions were not in fact coming". But some noted to The Post that Haley is extremely cautious and nearly always speaks with Trump personally before making public statements.

Trump last week tweeted that U.S. relations with Russia were at their lowest point since the Cold War - and put the blame at the feet of special counsel Robert Mueller and his investigation into Russian election meddling and possible collusion with the president's campaign.

"The president also wants the people in the region, our Gulf partners, to step up and do more, and he wants them to take on some of the financial responsibility of all of the military provided there in the region".
