According to ABC affiliate WVAW, firefighters would only confirm that authorities are investigating a plane crash. The weather at the time the plane went down was stormy, with heavy rain, lightning and strong winds. Further south, in the Lynchburg area, tornadoes or severe straight-line winds tore through a residential area, damaging homes and toppling trees.

One person is dead after a small, private airplane crashed into the mountainside northwest of Crozet on Sunday night. It's unlikely that the wind alone would have brought it down.
