Russian hackers 'already targeting United Kingdom for revenge'

Treasury Sanctions Iranian Cyber Actors for Malicious Cyber-Enabled Activities Targeting Hundreds of Universities

"Russia is our most capable hostile adversary in cyberspace so tackling them is a major priority for the National Cyber Security Centre and our USA allies", Ciaran Martin, CEO of the National Cyber Security Centre, said in a statement.

The technical alert said the United States government had been receiving information that the cyber actors had been exploiting switches - named by the ACSC as "switches with Cisco Smart Install accessible from the internet, and routers or switches with Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) enabled and exposed to the internet" - since 2015.

Federal Bureau of Investigation has high confidence that Russian state-sponsored cyber actors are using compromised routers to conduct man-in-the-middle attacks to support espionage, extract intellectual property, maintain persistent access to victim networks, and potentially lay a foundation for future offensive operations.

British and US officials said they had "high confidence" that the Kremlin was behind the attacks.

Millions of devices around the world are said to have been compromised in this way, with inherently poor security and poor default passwords exploited by the attackers.

"We have high confidence that Russian Federation has carried out a coordinated campaign to compromise. routers, residential and business - the things you and I have in our home", said Rob Joyce, the White House cybersecurity coordinator.

It's warned that a Russian government campaign to exploit these devices threatens safety, security, and economic well-being of the United States and the UK. The FBI said it is asking the public for help to "remediate" these vulnerabilities, and the Trump administration's cyber czar, Rob Joyce, said the us government needs the public's help to "undercut the Russian capability to use this as a tool against the world". Lastly, the alert outlined what erratic hardware behavior should indicate if a device has been already compromised.

These network devices make "ideal targets", said Manfra, Homeland Security's assistant secretary for cybersecurity and communications.

Ciaran Martin, CEO of the UK's National Cyber Security Centre, called it "a very significant moment as we hold Russian Federation to account and we improve our cyber defenses at the same time".

Russian Federation is being accused of a massive campaign to undermine the security of firewalls and routers in a bid to support espionage and future attacks.

Previously the two nations have spoken only of attacks "originating from Russia", with lines between Russian criminals and state activity being blurred, but they pinned blame on the Kremlin on this occasion.

The FBI also pledged to do whatever it takes to combat Russian cyberattacks.
