Russian Ambassador to USA warns of 'consequences' for Syrian missile strike

Russia vs USA Trump Putin and May

Russian Federation has dismissed the purported chemical attack as fake and strongly warned the US and its allies against launching a military strike in Syria.

Putin was quoted as urging for a "thorough and objective probe" into the reports of the chemical weapons attack. A new war against Syria would have negative consequences, especially because it would end the little confidence we have left over the acts of the West, Lavrov told the British public radio and television network BBC. "We're making sure we have all the information to know if we do something, what will happen, how will it happen and will it hurt anyone".

But US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis struck a cautious note, telling lawmakers that the need to "stop the murder of innocent people" had to be weighed up against the risk of things "escalating out of control".

Previously, U.S. officials said that Russian Federation was jamming U.S. drones in Syria.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said the U.S. mission "has not changed" and Mr Trump wanted troops home "as quickly as possible".

Eight other countries voted against it, and four abstained.

Trump said the strikes were meant to deter the use of chemical weapons like the attack on civilians in the Syrian town of Douma last week, and that the US was prepared to continue the attacks until the Syrian regime stops using chemical weapons. "This is not a threat".

He did not say what the evidence was.

"It's.highly likely an attempt to create complications for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) mission which was just starting its work in Syria's Douma, or an attempt to completely derail it", Interfax quoted Kosachev as saying.

"And special services of a country, which is now seeking to be in the first ranks of the Russophobic campaign, were involved in this", Lavrov said.

Tuesday: Nebenzia told the U.N. Security Council that images and videos of children foaming at the mouth and dying were fake. Moscow strongly warned against any strikes and threatened to retaliate.

As Haley began her remarks, she broke from the prepared text to say, "I started to listen to my Russian friend and respond, but instead I am in awe, Vassily, of how you say what you say with a straight face".

What is less clear is whether sarin - the agent used in the chemical attack last April that prompted United States missile strikes - or a similar agent was also used.

Russia's foreign minister has asserted that a suspected chemical attack in the Syrian town of Douma last weekend was fabricated with the help of an unspecified foreign intelligence agency. "We are carrying out an assessment of the material damages", the official added.

The U.N. chief told an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council Friday called by Russian Federation that the highly volatile situation risks "escalation, fragmentation and division as far as the eye can see with profound regional and global ramifications".

He accused Washington of putting global peace at risk and said the situation was "very dangerous".

But Guterres said Syria today is the most serious, and "there is no military solution to the conflict".

Putin added that Russian military experts who inspected Douma found no trace of the attack.

Haley kept up the pressure on Russian Federation.

"Tonight, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States took decisive action to strike the Syrian chemical weapons infrastructure..."

Doctors at the hospital where suspected victims were treated told reporters on the tour that none of the patients that night had suffered chemical weapons injuries - they were asphyxiated by dust and smoke in a bombardment. Russian Federation has also used its United Nations veto six times to prevent condemnation of Assad's use of chemical weapons.
