Multistate E. coli outbreak traced to romaine lettuce from Arizona

35 sick from E. Coli outbreak traced to romaine lettuce

Consumers should also avoid eating romaine salads in restaurants unless it can be verified that it doesn't come from Yuma, Arizona.

State and local public health agencies in Montana are investigating several reports of E. coli O157 illnesses linked to chopped romaine lettuce sourced from the winter growing areas in Yuma, Arizona.

The illnesses in all the states were reported between March 22 to March 31, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Chopped romaine lettuce has been linked to dozens of cases of E. coli and anyone who has the leafy green in their refrigerator is told to throw it away immediately, health officials said Friday.

In another development, a group of five produce grower trade groups issued a joint statement on April 14 that said its members are cooperating with government investigators and are working closely to identify the source of the outbreak tied to chopped romaine from the Yuma, Ariz., growing area, adding that almost all romaine being harvested and shipped now is from California areas not implicated in the outbreak. Most will get better within a week, but the symptoms can last longer and be severe.

The United States has been experiencing an E. coli outbreak affecting 11 states with 35 reported cases so far. Those symptoms are often accompanied by a low fever.

In New Jersey, seven people in four counties have contracted E. coli related to the outbreak - including four in Hunterdon County, and one each in Monmouth, Sussex and Somerset counties, according to state health officials. If you can not confirm the source of the chopped romaine lettuce, do not buy it or eat it.

Symptoms of E. coli infection are varied, but typically include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. Twenty-six (93%) of 28 people interviewed reported consuming romaine lettuce in the week before their illness started. There, doctors confirmed diagnosed her with hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious condition that can cause kidney failure, the lawsuit said.

Most people reported eating a salad at a restaurant, and romaine lettuce was the only common ingredient identified among the salads eaten.

Last year, an outbreak of 17 E. coli infections were reported in 13 states across the United States, all of which occurred from November 15, 2017 through December 8, 2017.

The FDA recommends that consumers ask restaurants and other food service establishments where their romaine lettuce originated, and avoid chopped romaine lettuce that originated from Yuma, Arizona.

Lettuce from restaurants is suspected to be affected, as well as bagged and pre-chopped lettuce from stores.

CDC urged people to check the origin of the romaine lettuce before buying it at a grocery store or ordering it at a restaurant.
