The trial in the Kathua rape case began today and the next hearing is scheduled April 28.

The Crime Branch of J-K Police, which probed the case, filed a main charge sheet against seven persons and a separate charge sheet against a juvenile in a court in Kathua district earlier this week. The eight-year-old minor Asifa Bano, a Bakarwal girl was brutally raped and murdered by eight men in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua. The counsel for the accused demanded a copy of the chargesheet filed by the Crime Branch on April 9 before the chief judicial magistrate. Now the matter is with the court.

The Delhi University unit of the All India Students' Association (AISA) today took out a candlelight march from Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station, demanding justice for Kathua and Unnao rape victims.

On Sunday, lawyer of the victim's family, Deepika Singh Rajawat, said that she fears she can be "raped or killed".

The father moved the Supreme Court on Monday alleging the circumstance in Kathua are not conducive to a free and fair trial and that it needs to be shifted.

The father expressed satisfaction with the probe conducted so far by the state police, while vehemently opposing the plea of senior advocate Bhim Singh and Delhi-based lawyer Anuja Kapur that the investigation be transferred to the CBI.

Meanwhile, the counsel for the victim's family Deepika S Rajawat has said, "The Supreme Court has issued directions to the authorities to provide protection to us (victim family and their counsel)".

Relatives of the victim present outside the Kathua court accused the media of ignoring extensive reportage of this heinous crime for almost three months. The lawyers who practise in that court and the bar association have even protested against the charge sheet being filed. An eight-year-old girl belonging to the nomadic community had gone missing on January 10 while grazing horses in Rasana forest in Kathua's Hiranagar area.
