European Union calls on Russia, Iran to prevent Syria from chemical weapons use

An RAF Tornado prepares to take off from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus to take part in the Syrian air strikes

United Kingdom government sources have confirmed a Pentagon analysis that showed a 20-fold increase in Russian-sourced "disinformation" being spread online since the cruise missile attacks on Syria in the early hours of Saturday, which has raised concerns that a campaign of cyber attacks by the Russia could follow, according to The Telegraph.

The Kremlin did not immediately respond to a request for comment late on Monday.

However, the inspection comes after the United States, France and the United Kingdom attacked Syria with the announced objective of destroying facilities that produce chemical weapons, for which they used the alleged incident in Duma as a pretext.

U.S. intelligence agencies in 2017 accused Russian Federation of interfering in the 2016 election with a hacking and propaganda campaign supporting Donald Trump's campaign for president.

Millions of devices belonging to government offices, internet service providers and critical infrastructure operators were affected, the statement continued. The statement did not identify any victims by name.

United States and U.K. relations with Vladimir Putin's administration are at a low, following the use of nerve agent to poison a former double agent in Britain in March and the US-led bombing of Syria over the weekend.

The Kremlin said on Tuesday it did not understand the basis for British and US allegations that Russian Federation was conducting a global cyber espionage campaign.

Britain and the United States said they issued the alert to help targets protect themselves and persuade victims to share information with government investigators so they can better understand the threat.

According to a joint statement between British intelligence, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the White House National Security Council and Homeland Security on Monday, Russian "cyber actors" had compromised routers, which are used to connect computers to the internet, to breach security systems and steal information.

As tensions remain high over Russia's involvement in Syria, its alleged tampering in the 2016 United States election and the poisoning of a former Russian spy, the UK and USA say that Russia will be held accountable for the cyber-attacks.

Underlining the significance of the risk, White House cyber security coordinator Rob Joyce said that anyone who "owns the router" can monitor all the traffic and consequently has the ability to do things such as harvest credentials and modify or deny traffic.

USA and British officials warned that infected routers could be used to launch future offensive cyber operations.
