CWG organisers apologise for shameful closing ceremony

CWG Hockey Sophie Bray hat-trick helps England rout India 6-0 in bronze medal match

Viewers turned to social media to vent their frustration after organisers decided not to show the athletes and flagbearers enter Carrara Stadium on the Gold Coast to the traditional chorus of cheers during the closing ceremony.

It comes after the end to the Games was panned by viewers and Channel Seven host Johanna Griggs live on-air after the network copped criticism for not showing the athletes entering the stadium - including flag bearer Kurt Fearnley.

"We can't be any more honest about it than that", he added.

"We don't really want to be integrated, we're Paralympians and they're Olympians", said Kelly Cartwright, an amputee who won long jump gold at the 2012 Paralympics and competed in the power-lifting on the Gold Coast.

The ceremony also featured at least seven speeches by dignitaries, including Mr Beattie, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, and the Lord Mayor of Birmingham - the 2022 Commonwealth Games host city.

"But we made a mistake.that was clearly a stuff up".

The Host broadcaster played no part in the pre-show and therefore had no footage to provide. We got that wrong.

"If we'd left that briefing room with any indication given to us that no athletes would feature, then of course we would have made other arrangements to capture those moments".

Beattie said they "got it wrong" and that athletes should have been part of the ceremony. "We got that wrong".

Performances from local musicians including Amy Shark, Guy Sebastian, Yothu Yindi, Kate Cebrano and Dami Im were included in the broadcast.

"We were driven by the welfare of athletes".

During the entire blunder, the marching athletes, including the flag-bearers of various countries, were seen leaving the stadium while the closing speeches were still in progress. "He sometimes tells me to take it easy after competition but I can't help it", she said. I'm furious. Actually wrecking a a tradition that is so important.

"I didn't even hear the closing ceremony was what it was this morning when I got here".

"I think every other event should be trying to do the same so they have to make the programme, they have to look at scheduling and make sure that the male events don't dominate the female events".

Many athletes and fans left the closing ceremonies early, according to reports. "You want to see them jumping in front of camera".

"I was one of hundreds of dancers and we had the most exhilarating experience and I'm gutted that Australia missed out on it", she said.

"On behalf of the Commonwealth Games family, thank you Gold Coast, thank you athletes and thank you all".

"Let's have this conversation on a greater level and let's make sure we can do something positive for what's happening right here", Fearnley said.
