Benjamin Garre: Manchester City cleared by Cas over signing of Argentine teenager

City won the title with five games to spare but will strengthen again before next season

Manchester City are breathing a big sigh of relief after learning that they have avoided facing a transfer ban, similar to the ones experienced by Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in recent years, over of the signing of an Argentine teenager by the name of Benjamin Garre.

Velez complained that City broke rules in signing the young forward, but Federation Internationale de Football Association upheld City's argument that he was free to join them after his 16th birthday, because the youngster has an Italian passport and players in Europe are free to move when they turn 16 if they do not sign a professional contract.

Velez alleged City acted unethically in approaching Garre when he was still 15, then broke transfer regulations by signing him when he turned 16.

Of some encouragement to City is that Federation Internationale de Football Association ratified the transfer and upheld City's argument that their capture of Garre, who is now playing in their Under 23 side, was not a breach of the regulations because he holds an Italian passport. CAS has not released its formal decision, but is expected to find the case in City's favour.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) are set to release a verdict in the coming days and it is understood that City were given indication on Tuesday morning that they had won.

City are waiting to discover if they'll be hit with a transfer ban, according to reports in The Telegraph and The Daily Mail.

"We're angry because City came after our player, we said no and they took him anyway", declared Velez club secretary Bernardo Bertelloni previous year. The court will publish the reasoned verdict on Friday.

"He (Garre) left here a couple of days before his 16th birthday, he spent a few days in Germany and he entered England one day after his 16th birthday".

But City manager Pep Guardiola is now free to continue his transfer plans as he looks to strengthen his squad once the transfer window reopens at the end of the season.
