Data released by the General Administration of Customs showed that the surplus with the U.S. jumped 19.4% to US$58 billion between January and March compared to the same period past year. China exported US$137.8 billion worth of high-tech products in the first quarter, up 20.5 per cent on-year.

In response to the announcement, the Taiwan Ministry of Defense issued a statement in which it said that its military forces had the situation under control and that they could guarantee the security of the autonomous island, which China claims as part of its territory.

Since there is no fixed timeline set by either Washington or Beijing for the actual imposition of tariffs, it is expected that the doors are still open for negotiations and a possible compromise would be worked out to limit the damages to both the sides.

The main source of concern is the escalating tensions with China after Trump last month imposed steep tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, and then then hit Beijing with punitive duties in retaliation for massive theft of United States intellectual property.

In the first week of April, the USA announced tariffs worth $50 billion on Chinese products which, it said, was the result of Beijing forcing the American companies to transfer their technology to China's firms.

During Trump's first year in office the surplus reached record highs - $375 billion by United States counting, or $276 billion according to Chinese data. However, in March, average concentrations climbed 2.1 percent from the year before to 48 micrograms per cubic metre.

China and the USA - the world's two largest economies - are locked in an ugly trade spat with both sides hitting back at each other by imposing slapping economic tariffs.

Imports of commodities continued to lead the way in March, with shipments of copper, crude oil, iron ore and soybeans all rising from the previous month.

The yuan appreciated around 3.7 per cent against the U.S. dollar in the first quarter this year, on top of a 6.6 per cent gain last year.
